What are Major Arcana correspondences?
A list of Major Arcana correspondences (also called major arcana associations) is a way of combining separate schools of divination and esoteric philosophy. By using the above table, it’s possible to make connections between the worlds of tarot, alchemy, numerology and astrology. It’s also possible to assign “Yes or No” values to each of the Major Arcana cards.
By learning the tarot correspondences (or having this cheat sheet handy) you can add new and fascinating layers to your tarot readings. For example, if the Justice tarot card appears in your readings, the table of Major Arcana correspondences allows for more creative interpretations and references: Perhaps the card applies to the primary element of Air. Perhaps it is referencing the zodiac symbol Libra — or a person born under that sign? Perhaps the primary numerological number 2 is being referenced?
By bringing together these different worlds of knowledge, you can supercharge your readings and bring new dimensions of understanding to your interpretations.

Where do tarot correspondences come from?
Much of the work on tarot correspondences was accomplished by a secretive group called The Golden Dawn, which formed in the late 19th century. The Golden Dawn set out to form a unified system under which the laws of astrology, numerology, tarot and other occult practices all worked together in a single construct. For more information about the links between these schools of philosophy, read our deep dive into the connections between astrology and tarot.
What about Yes or No meanings?
Yes or no tarot meanings are generally accepted. This means while most tarot readers today adhere to the same rules, there are some competing yes or no rule-sets out there, and there are no hard-and-fast rules regarding which set of yes/no correspondences is correct.
iFate uses these generally accepted yes or no tarot meanings, but as you dive deep into tarot lore, don’t be surprised if you occasionally come across subtle differences to these correspondences.
